Thank you all for an unforgettable evening at CUP’s 4th Annual Leadership Gala last Thursday evening! Over 500 of you joined us and with your support we raised over $700,000 in generous contributions.

Your help will allow us to continue and build on the great work we’ve done this year – pressing for enforcement of minority and women business legislation; continuing to train and graduate new classes of CUP Fellows; and matching greater numbers of CUP members with prominent nonprofit and public sector boards. We look forward to continuing to advance these goals for many years ahead as we connect, empower and mobilize this vibrant network and our community.

Some highlights from the evening:

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York City Comptroller John Liu kicked off the festivities with their inspiring addresses to the sold-out crowd, reiterating their commitment to leveling the playing field and increasing access and opportunity.

Hal Lenox, President of AT&T New York, presented the Corporate Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Award to Cindy Brinkley, Chief Diversity Officer who accepted on behalf of AT&T and spoke of her personal commitment to promoting a diverse workforce and supplier pipeline.

Chris Williams of The Williams Capital Group presented the New York City Vision Leadership Award to Kathy Wylde, President & CEO of the Partnership for New York City, for the exceptional work she does every day to engage the business community to build New York City’s economy.

Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the President & Assistant to the President for Public, Engagement & Intergovernmental Affairs, was given the Public Service Innovation Leadership Award for her commitment to diversity and urban communities. Michael Strautmanis, Deputy Assistant to the President and Counselor for Strategic Engagement to the Senior Advisor, accepted on her behalf and conveyed President Barack Obama’s support for CUP and our vision.

John Rhea, Chairman of the New York City Housing Authority, presented the Distinguished Philanthropist & Entrepreneur Leadership Award to Russell Simmons, Chairman & CEO of Rush Communications, for his vision, leadership and philanthropy.

We want to send out a heartfelt “thank you” to our all of our members, our corporate partners and our donors. Your support and generosity enables CUP to be at the forefront of creating future generations of diverse leaders.

On Saturday, March 27, CUP welcomed the 2010 fellows class at the annual kick-off retreat for a series of high impact leadership training exercises.

“Walking into the CUP retreat was like walking into a combination war room/lecture hall/support group,” said Vincent Harris, Associate, Prudential Capital Group. “The warmth was evident, but it was made very clear very early on that we had been brought together to work. The CUP program is crafted to help fellows sharpen our skills and then train our collective power and influence on the the most pressing issues in our community. The experience was, in a word, humbling.”

The fellows learned about crafting and delivering concise and memorable elevator speeches, building trust with diverse constituencies, and the power behind effective leadership. In addition, the fellows heard from both Assemblyman Jonathan Bing and Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. about their personal and professional journeys and offered advice on civic engagement and community involvement.

On April 8, welcomed 500 guests to our 3rd Annual Leadership Gala and raised over $600,000 to help us work even harder to increase the number of low-income students that graduate from college, generate access to capital for minority and women owned businesses, and expand and enhance civic participation and leadership in our communities!

A few highlights of the evening:

James Esposito of Goldman Sachs presented Janice Savin Williams and Christopher Williams of The Williams Capital Group with an award for “New York City Vision Leadership” in honor of their tireless commitment to New York City’s cultural and educational institutions.

Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott recognized Joel Greenblatt, John Petry and Eva Moskowitz, founders of the Success Charter Network, for the exceptional results their students are showing and for the new opportunities they are presenting to hundreds of low income children of color.

American Express CEO Ken Chenault honored Earvin “Magic” Johnson for his outstanding leadership as an entrepreneur in urban communities – and Magic Johnson spoke movingly and with deep inspiration about the significance of economic development as a tool to empower minority and women business owners and to elevate the neighborhoods they live in.

We were honored to highlight the example these leaders set every day through their unwavering dedication to minority business enterprise, innovative education reform and leadership growth and development across New York City and State.

To our incredibly generous and committed corporate partners, our gala chairs and host committee, and to all of our donors and guests: This evening and the important work it allows us to carry on would not be possible without your support.

Thank you for believing in and so wholeheartedly supporting our shared goals and vision!
