Deputy Director, iMentor NYC

Job description

ABOUT IMENTOR

iMentor has developed a student-centric, cost-effective model that makes mentoring rigorous, reliable and consistent.

Mentors help ensure that more low-income, first-generation college students graduate high school college-ready and make

the successful transition to college. iMentor’s model addresses four key challenges:

• Getting More Mentors Involved: iMentor’s model adds flexibility to the volunteer commitment without sacrificing the

rigor of mentoring relationships, increasing the number of people who can volunteer. Mentors and mentees build

relationships using a combination of weekly email exchanges and monthly in-person meetings.

• Making Mentoring Effective: iMentor has identified a unique niche in which mentors are highly effective, helping

students build non-classroom competencies that are linked to high school and college success. Even if mentors don’t

have previous experience in education or youth-development, iMentor’s model makes them effective in their roles

through a combination of curriculum and targeted staff support.

• Whole School Partnerships in NYC: The program enrolls entire grades, eliminating self-selection and providing a

holistic student support resource for schools. Mentors augment guidance and college counseling programs—which are

often under-staffed and under-resourced—providing every single student in a school with one-on-one support from a

caring adult and supporting the development of a college going culture in schools.

• Provide the iMentor Model to Others Through iMentor Interactive: iMentor partners with non-profits and schools

and provides them with everything they need to run quality mentoring programs in the iMentor model, including: a highimpact

curriculum, an online platform for managing all aspects of the mentoring program, and intensive consulting

services.

Impact: This year alone, the organization will serve 2,400 students in NYC. In 2009-10, 83% of mentees graduated from

high school and 67% enrolled in college. Compared to non-iMentor participants, mentees showed statistically significant

increases in math grades, standardized test scores, and attendance.

Growth: iMentor is in the middle of an ambitious five year growth plan, which includes national expansion through iMentor

Interactive, as well as growing the mentoring program in New York City. By 2013, iMentor will reach 3,000 mentee-mentor

pairs in New York City and empower countless organizations across the country to build a national mentoring movement.
